Description
This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Spanish culture, history, and identity. Through a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates literature, art, music, and film, students will explore the complex evolution of Spain from its early kingdoms to the modern, multicultural society it is today. The course will examine pivotal moments in Spanish history, including the era of the Spanish Empire and its decline, the impact of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship on contemporary Spain, and the country’s ongoing struggle to define its plurinational identity. Along the way, students will explore Spain’s artistic and cultural heritage and will delve into topics such as race, national identity, gender, and sexuality, examining the ways in which these factors have influenced Spanish society over time.
