Additional Grades
The following grades are also used on the transcript. A definition of each of these grades appears below.
INC* | Term’s work incomplete (temporary grade): INC (Incomplete) should only be given by the instructor in consultation with the student when there is a reasonable expectation that a student can successfully complete the requirements of the course no later than the last day of the following semester, or its equivalent in calendar time, exclusive of Summer Session/Term The grade of “INC” lapses to an “FIN” grade no later than the last day of the following semester, or its equivalent in calendar time, exclusive of Summer Session/Term. |
P | Pass/fail option is only allowed to students in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences–read Pass/Fail option in the Undergraduate Guide to Academic Policies and Procedures. This grade is also used when a student completes a non-credit bearing course and certain internship courses. The P grade is not included in GPA calculation. |
W | Withdrew without penalty within a specified period (see the Baruch College Academic Calendar). |
R | Course must be repeated until minimum proficiency is attained. |
AUD | Only for nondegree students (an auditor or listener in the class). No credit granted. |
CR | Credit earned (transfer credits, military service, or exemption credit). Grades in these courses are not included in computation of the scholastic index or in computing class standing. |
Y | An intermediate grade assigned after the first of a multi-semester Honors sequence course to signify work in progress. The Y grade is not included in calculating the grade point average. Each Y grade is replaced by the earned letter grade when the sequence has been completed. |
PEN | Pending. Assigned when a student's coursework is under review by an academic committee for possible infraction of academic integrity standards. The grade must be resolved by the end of the final examination period of the subsequent semester. |
WA | Administrative withdrawal, given when a student fails to document compliance with New York State Public Health Law 2165 regarding measles, mumps, and rubella within 30 days of the start of the semester (45 days for international students). Non-punitive. |
WD | Assigned to students who officially drop a course and incur tuition liability. Non-punitive and does not appear on transcript. |
WN | Assigned to students who never participated in an academically related activity and incur tuition liability. Non-punitive and does not appear on transcript. This grade supersedes the WD grade. |
WU | A grade of WU is to be assigned to students who participated in an academic activity related to the class at least once, stopped participating, did not drop the class or receive approval for an incomplete, did not otherwise officially withdraw from the course, and did not complete enough work for the instructor to be able to calculate an earned grade using the criteria delineated in the course syllabus. |
*Students must be doing passing work to obtain an instructor’s permission to receive a grade of incomplete (INC).
A grade of incomplete (INC) received in the fall semester must be resolved by the end of the following spring semester. A grade of INC received in the spring semester or summer term must be resolved by the end of the following fall semester.
Students who receive this grade may not register for or attend (“sit in”) the course in the following semester.
To resolve incomplete (INC) grades issued for missing course work and/or examination(s), the student should meet with the instructor and arrange to complete the requirements for a letter grade before the expiration of the following semester.
An unresolved INC grade will be converted to FIN and calculated as an F in the computation of the cumulative GPA after the grace period.
