Comic opera, operetta, and musical comedy are here subject to close investigation. Emergence of intermezzi in the late eighteenth century inaugurates the study. Subsequently, concern centers on the rise of German singspiel, French opera comique, English comic opera, and American musical comedy. Stress is placed on musical substance and textual and dramatic content. Lavish musical illustration is carried out in the classroom.
