Women in African History

Description

This course examines the contributions of women to historical change in Africa during pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras. Topics include origin stories, slavery, colonial rule, education, clitoridectomy, marriage and the law, sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV/AIDS), women's economic activities, the challenges of development. The course goes beyond focusing on women's contributions by making a case for using gender as a category with which to analyze and interpret the past. Cross-Listed in the Department of History. Students will receive credit either BLS or HIS, not for both.
