Survey of African history

Description

This course addresses the history of Africa's diverse peoples, from their domestication of plants and animals through the decades following independence in the 1960's. Other topics include the creation of trading networks and empires, and the development and consequences of various slave trades in Africa.The course also examines how Africans contended with the social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges, and opportunities of colonial rule, with close attention to African's struggles to achieve independence and meet the challenges of the contemporary world. Cross-listed in the Department of History. Student will receive credits for one cross-listed course.
