Program Description

Description:

Baruch College offers a BS in Computer Science, based in Baruch’s mathematics department, and in collaboration with the Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics (ISS).

Learning Goals:

Upon completion of the major, students will be able to:

1.      Write advanced computer programs in multiple programming languages, including object-oriented code.

2.      Design efficient algorithms for real-world problems in a variety of fields. This includes incorporating common data structures into the algorithm, modifying existing algorithms, and relying on algorithmic approaches such as divide-and-conquer and dynamic programming.

3.      Describe and work with the major physical components of computer systems, such as processors, memory hierarchies, and I/O systems.

4.      Understand and interact with major components of operating systems, such as filesystems, process scheduling, and basic security mechanisms.

5.      Discuss and explain the theory of computer science, including topics such as computational complexity and computational models.
